… Operatives of Project WISE West enforce compliance with zero-tolerance stance on indiscriminate waste disposal
The Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA), through its Project WISE West team, has commenced sealing of multiple markets, plazas, and shopping complexes along the LASU-Igando Road corridor in Igando, Alimosho Local Government Area, following persistent indiscriminate refuse disposal on the road median. The enforcement action, which began on Saturday, August 1, 2026, comes after several default notices and Intention to Seal notices were ignored by the affected businesses.
The sealed facilities include Owode Market, Omo Oba Shopping Complex, Oja Oba Market, Irewolede Market, Egan Junction Market, BOA Shopping Complex, Blissful Electronics Stores, Irewolede Plaza, 3C Hub Stores, and several unnamed shops along the Ikotun-Igando axis. The businesses were found to have turned the LASU-Igando Road median into a dumping ground, defacing the environment and posing serious public health risks, despite repeated warnings and the availability of assigned PSP operators.
The enforcement operation, is part of a broader strategy to ensure that all commercial entities comply with environmental regulations and contribute to a cleaner environment. The affected facilities will remain sealed until the necessary sanitation standards are met and the authorities are satisfied with the level of compliance. The Authority has made it clear that no business, regardless of its size or influence, is above the law.
In a related development, the Project WISE team has also commenced issuance of Intention to Seal notices to markets, shops, and plazas along the Ojuelegba-Lawanson-Itire corridor, following similar sanitation violations. The notices give the affected businesses a 48-hour window to comply with environmental regulations or face sealing.
The Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of LAWMA, Dr. Muyiwa Gbadegesin, reiterated the Authority’s zero-tolerance stance on environmental violations, stating that businesses that fail to comply with sanitation laws would face the full weight of the law. He urged all business owners to embrace responsible waste management practices and patronise approved PSP operators.
The enforcement operation is expected to continue across other parts of the State where similar violations persist, as part of the government’s commitment to maintaining a cleaner, healthier, and more sustainable Lagos.
