The Lagos State Government has announced that 1,710 public toilets are currently functioning across the state as part of efforts to eliminate open defecation and improve sanitation.

The Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, disclosed this while reiterating the state’s commitment to expanding sanitation infrastructure and promoting public health.

Wahab explained that the public toilets have been strategically located across the state to serve residents and visitors, noting that access to sanitation remains critical to maintaining a clean and healthy environment.

He, however, stressed that government efforts alone would not be sufficient to end open defecation, urging private businesses to support the initiative.

According to him, establishments such as filling stations, banks, eateries, and other public-facing facilities are encouraged to make their restroom facilities accessible to the public where possible.

The commissioner said this collaborative approach would significantly complement government efforts and improve access to sanitation facilities across the state.

Wahab also revealed that enforcement of environmental sanitation laws is ongoing, adding that individuals caught engaging in open defecation are being arrested and prosecuted in line with the law.

He noted that the enforcement measures are necessary to protect public health, preserve dignity, and maintain environmental cleanliness across the state.

The commissioner added that while the government continues to expand sanitation infrastructure, residents and businesses must also play their part in ensuring a cleaner and more habitable Lagos.

He reaffirmed the government’s commitment to sustaining sanitation reforms as part of broader efforts to achieve a cleaner and safer environment for all residents.
