Special Adviser, Permanent Secretaries, Local Government Chairman, Residents, Students, Volunteers participate in coordinated clean-up
The Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of the Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA), Dr. Muyiwa Gbadegesin, joined officials of the Lagos State Ministry of the Environment and Water Resources for the Monthly Environmental Sanitation Exercise in Badagry, reinforcing the State Government’s shared commitment to a cleaner, healthier, and more sustainable Lagos. The exercise, held on Saturday, saw a coordinated effort by government officials, residents, students, community volunteers, and LAWMA street sweepers working together to clean public spaces.
The exercise was led by the Special Adviser to the Governor on Environment, Engr. Rotimi Akodu, alongside the Permanent Secretary, Office of Environmental Services, Dr. Omogbolahan Tajudeen Gaji, and the Permanent Secretary, Office of Drainage Services, Engr. Mahmood Kunle Adegbite. The team was received by the Chairman of Badagry Local Government, Hon. Babatunde Hunpe, who demonstrated the local government’s commitment to environmental sustainability.
In Ajara, the team monitored residents, students, government officials, community volunteers, and LAWMA street sweepers working in unison to clean public spaces. LAWMA evacuation trucks promptly removed the waste collected, ensuring that the exercise translated into a visible and immediate improvement in the environment. The seamless coordination between the street sweepers, residents, and evacuation trucks highlighted the effectiveness of the State Government’s integrated approach to waste management.
Dr. Gbadegesin expressed particular encouragement at Badagry Local Government’s deployment of tricycle compactors, describing the initiative as a practical investment that supports LAWMA’s last-mile collection initiative. The tricycle compactors extend waste services to densely populated and hard-to-reach communities where conventional compactor trucks cannot operate effectively, ensuring that no community is left behind in the pursuit of a cleaner Lagos.
The LAWMA MD emphasised that environmental sanitation succeeds when the entire system works together. He noted that the collaboration among the State Government, Badagry Local Government, community leaders, volunteers, and residents shows what coordinated action can achieve. The exercise demonstrated that when all stakeholders play their part, the dividends of collective responsibility are immediately visible.
Dr. Gbadegesin reaffirmed the Authority’s commitment to strengthening partnerships and building a cleaner, more resilient, and environmentally sustainable Lagos. He urged residents to continue to participate actively in the monthly sanitation exercise and to embrace proper waste disposal practices as a daily civic responsibility.
