… 48-hour compliance deadline issued to Multipurpose Market, Egan Junction Market, Irewolede Market

The Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) Waste Investigation, Surveillance and Enforcement (WISE) team has served Intention to Seal notices and default notices to markets, plazas, and shops along the LASU-Igando Road corridor in Igando, following persistent indiscriminate refuse disposal on the road median. The notices, which expire on Friday, 31st July 2026, give the affected businesses 48 hours to comply with sanitation regulations or face sealing and dislodgement.
The enforcement action, carried out by the WISE (West) team, targeted three major markets in the area: Multipurpose Market, Egan Junction Market, and Irewolede Market. The businesses were found to have turned the LASU-Igando Road median into a dumping ground, defacing the environment and posing serious public health risks, despite the availability of assigned PSP operators and public waste bins.
The Authority noted that the sealing of the shops is part of a broader enforcement strategy to ensure that all commercial entities comply with environmental regulations and contribute to a cleaner environment. The WISE team, in collaboration with local waste policing boys and with the full support of market heads in the Igando axis, is monitoring compliance and ensuring that the notices are heeded.
The Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of LAWMA, Dr. Muyiwa Gbadegesin, reiterated the Authority’s zero-tolerance stance on environmental violations, stating that businesses that fail to comply with sanitation laws would face the full weight of the law. He urged all business owners to embrace responsible waste management practices and patronise approved PSP operators.
The enforcement operation is expected to continue across other parts of the State where similar violations persist, as part of the government’s commitment to maintaining a cleaner, healthier, and more sustainable Lagos. The affected markets will be sealed if compliance is not achieved within the 48-hour window.
