Lagos State transport union leaders have committed to full compliance with the re-introduced environmental sanitation exercise. During a meeting with State Government officials on Wednesday, the National Union of Road Transport Workers and the Road Transport Employers Association of Nigeria agreed that no commercial vehicle will load passengers at any park or garage between 6:30am and 8:30am on the last Saturday of every month.

NURTW State Secretary Comrade Usman Teslim stated that the union will form internal task forces to enforce the decision, adding that the period should be devoted to cleaning homes and surroundings. He noted that union rules require support for government policies where they operate. RTEAN Deputy State Secretary Comrade Kaojue Abolaji also confirmed that all affiliate branches will be directed to keep vehicles off the roads until after 8:30am on those days.

Environment Commissioner Tokunbo Wahab explained that the sanitation initiative already operates in markets every Thursday and is now being extended to residential areas. He urged union leaders to engage their counterparts in neighbouring states for cooperation. Transportation Commissioner Oluwaseun Osiyemi called on transport operators to educate commuters on proper waste disposal and to avoid dumping refuse on roads, medians, drainages, and canals.
