48-hour compliance window issued to erring premises and sections of the market

The Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) Waste Investigation, Surveillance and Enforcement (WISE) Team has served Intention to Seal Notices to premises and sections of Oshodi Market, following persistent violations of the Lagos State Environmental Law.

The enforcement action, carried out on Monday, 3rd August 2026, was triggered by indiscriminate disposal of waste, failure to maintain proper environmental sanitation, and non-compliance with waste management regulations by businesses operating within the market.

The monitoring operation revealed that despite the availability of assigned PSP operators and public waste bins, traders and business owners had continued to dump refuse indiscriminately, defacing the environment and posing serious public health risks. The notices give the affected premises 48 hours to comply with sanitation regulations or face sealing.

The Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of LAWMA, Dr. Muyiwa Gbadegesin, reiterated the Authority’s zero-tolerance stance on environmental violations, stating that businesses that fail to comply with sanitation laws would face the full weight of the law. He urged all traders and business owners to embrace responsible waste management practices and patronise approved PSP operators.

The enforcement operation is expected to continue across other markets and commercial areas where similar violations persist, as part of the government’s commitment to maintaining a cleaner, healthier, and more sustainable Lagos.
