The Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) has sustained its vegetal control and street sanitation operations along major corridors across the state, with teams deployed to Cele Ilasa, Iyana Isolo, and the Oshodi Expressway. The exercise forms part of the Agency’s ongoing efforts to tidy up road medians, improve visibility for motorists, and maintain a clean and orderly environment across Lagos.

According to the Agency, the vegetal control team has continued work along the Cele Expressway, where sanitarians have been deployed to rake off waste thoroughly. The operation is progressing towards Oshodi, with crews working systematically to clear overgrown vegetation and accumulated waste from the corridor.

In a related exercise, LAWMA’s Street Sanitation and Vegetal Control teams have been captured on video tidying up the median of the Apapa Expressway following a bulk evacuation exercise.

The Agency noted that these operations are part of a sustained programme to keep the state’s highways and corridors clean, and that teams remain on ground to ensure the work is completed and maintained. Residents and commuters along the affected corridors have been urged to cooperate with the sanitation teams and to avoid indiscriminate dumping.

In response to questions from members of the public about enforcement and the arrest of offenders, LAWMA clarified that its operations go beyond clearing, cleaning, and disinfecting dump sites. LAWMA also investigates, arrests, and prosecutes individuals and businesses that violate the State’s environmental laws. Recent enforcement actions demonstrate this dual approach.

On 9 September 2026, a Meiran resident, Nelly Monday, was arrested for dumping refuse in a drainage channel during rainfall. She was arraigned before the Magistrate Court sitting at Bolade, Oshodi, where she pleaded guilty and was sentenced to one month in prison. In a separate operation, two defaulters were apprehended at the Oworonsoki axis for indiscriminate dumping of refuse at unauthorised locations and were taken to the Oshodi Task Force Office for prosecution.

In another enforcement drive, LAWMA Project WISE operatives sealed three facilities across Ikeja, Mosan-Okunola LCDA, and Idimu for non-compliance with the Lagos State Environmental Protection Law. The affected facilities were sanctioned for indiscriminate refuse disposal, lack of waste containerisation, and refusal to pay waste bills. The premises remain sealed until the necessary conditions for reopening are met.
While it also intensified its crackdown on cart pushers along the Lagos-Badagry Expressway, with several carts seized during an operation aimed at curbing illegal waste disposal and preventing the re-emergence of illegal dumping points along the corridor.
LAWMA reiterated that enforcement is a core part of its mandate, alongside cleaning and evacuation. The Authority urged residents to report environmental violations through its official channels and to support ongoing efforts to maintain a cleaner, healthier, and more sustainable Lagos.
