LAWMA warns residents against indiscriminate waste disposal as enforcement intensifies across Lagos

Nelly Monday, 53, who was arrested in Meiran on Wednesday, 9 September 2026 for dumping refuse in drainage channels during rainfall, has been convicted of the offence. She was arraigned before the Magistrate Court sitting at Bolade, Oshodi, where she pleaded guilty and was sentenced to one month in prison.
The conviction followed a tip-off received by the LAWMA Enforcement Team, which led to her arrest in a joint operation involving the Kick Against Indiscipline (KAI) and the Mobile Police. The arrest underscored the Authority’s commitment to enforcing environmental laws and ensuring that those who endanger public health and safety through indiscriminate dumping are held accountable.
In a separate operation, the LAWMA Waste Investigation, Surveillance and Enforcement team on night shift apprehended two defaulters at the Oworonsoki axis for indiscriminate dumping of refuse at unauthorised locations. The suspects, Charity Effiong, a chef and resident of Iyana Oworo, and Jonathan Orji, a trader from Imo State also residing in Iyana Oworo, were arrested on Friday, 11 September 2026. Both are to be taken to the Oshodi Task Force Office for proper investigation and prosecution at the mobile court in line with the environmental protection law of Lagos State.
LAWMA warns residents against indiscriminate waste disposal, particularly dumping refuse in drainage channels and other unauthorised locations, as such acts are environmental offences that attract sanctions under the law. The Authority will continue to work with relevant enforcement agencies to identify and sanction environmental offenders across Lagos.
Residents are urged to dispose of their waste responsibly and through approved channels. The Authority reaffirmed its zero-tolerance stance on environmental violations and called on Lagosians to cooperate with enforcement teams in the collective effort to maintain a cleaner, healthier, and more sustainable Lagos.
