The Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) has stepped in to provide direct house-to-house waste collection in parts of Mushin where the Private Sector Participant (PSP) system has failed. The intervention, which has been ongoing for several weeks, has significantly reduced the quantum of waste brought to the median of Agege Motor Road, offering a sustainable solution to the long-standing environmental challenges in the area.

The direct collection exercise involves LAWMA sanitation crews moving through designated streets to collect waste from households, ensuring that residents have a reliable alternative to the PSP operators who have been non-functional for months. The initiative is part of a broader strategy to address waste management gaps in high-density communities while the Authority works to introduce new PSP operators, tricycle collection vehicles, and public waste bins.

A LAWMA official confirmed that the intervention has been effective in curbing indiscriminate dumping along the Agege Motor Road corridor. “Recent videos suggesting a resurgence of waste are misleading. The situation is under control. We have been providing direct collection for weeks now, and this has helped to reduce the quantum of waste coming to the median. This is far better than allowing residents to bring it to the median,” the official stated.

The Authority noted that the direct collection exercise would continue until a permanent solution is in place, including the onboarding of new PSP operators, the deployment of tricycle collection vehicles to access narrow streets, and the installation of public waste bins in strategic locations. Residents are encouraged to cooperate with LAWMA teams during the collection process and to dispose of waste responsibly.

LAWMA reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring that every part of Lagos enjoys a clean, healthy, and sustainable environment. The Authority urged residents to report any waste management issues through its toll-free lines and to remain patient as the transition to a more efficient system takes shape.
